My mother-in-law has always been a stickler for detail and meticulous planning. Those tendencies came in handy when her daughter and I tied the knot last year. I can still remember talking to the two of them about reception plans over dinner one night. Without knowing any better, I wondered if there was any real reason to assign seating for the wedding reception.
The ladies patiently explained to me that assigned seating creates a few frustrations and a bit of extra work for the planners, but it saves embarrassment and awkwardness. Wedding place card holders let the guests know where they are expected to sit during the post-nuptial feast, and they are a useful way to group people based on their familiarity with each other and their unique temperament.
