In our consumer-based society, the personal touch that gifts used to carry has been lost. Traditionally, keepsake gifts such as jewelry, art and antiques were passed on through generations and became treasured family heirlooms. Today, many people would see an antique gift as a sign of frugality and laziness on the part of the gift giver.

My family has tried to maintain a sense of community and heritage by preserving our family heirlooms and working to create new ones. In order to facilitate this process, certain gift-giving holidays are designated as “keepsake holidays” in our family. On these occasions, you are not allowed to give a gift that you bought at a retailer. Instead, it must be an heirloom or something original and handmade, such as a photograph or piece of artwork.

When you have a new baby on the way and are planning a baby shower family and friends intend to attend, it’s wise to register at a variety of different stores. Registering ensures that you receive baby shower gifts you want, and also gifts that you don’t intend to purchase or own at the current time. Some common stores where people will shop for baby gifts include Target, Wal-Mart, Macy’s, JC Penney, Sears, or other common department stores near your location. It is wise to register for several gifts even though you might want certain gifts more than others. Stores will often run out of stock, or not carry some items depending on demand and location.

For those special people in your life, it never hurts to hint at the gifts you want the most so you’re certain to get them. It is also smart to prepare some baby shower favors so that the guests at your gathering have a memento to remember you and your baby by.

In many Christian denominations, baptism is a momentous rite of passage. Children might not remember many details of an event that takes place so early in their lives; for parents and extended family, however, every detail counts. Some baptismal ceremonies are performed before an entire church congregation, which only adds to the event’s prestige.

Baptism gifts should be more than ephemeral items to be consumed and discarded. The most thoughtful presents can be enjoyed as keepsakes for years to come, and they should include a personal touch. That’s not to say that all baptism gifts should be handmade, but they should at least offer some suggestion of a close personal connection.

Angel BabyWhat month is your  baby going to be being born in?

The time of the year of when a baby is born is an important factor on how to decorate for their baby shower and what kinds of favors to give out to your friends and family. Think of your babies birthstone, or the season in which they are going to be born in, along with whether the baby is going to be a boy and a girl. Incorporate the respective colors of their birthstones and the pink and blue for either a girl or a boy. Glean the colors associated with the season associated with the baby’s date of birth. This will make the baby shower experience feel personal and more in tune with the baby girl or baby boy about to be born!

baby keepsakesWhen my siblings and I were little my parents were obsessive about chronicling our development. Although this recording of our histories has continued to this day, it was most fervent in our early years. Our home is littered with childhood portraits and our own original creations.

Since I was the first child, there are a particularly high number of baby keepsakes of mine. My parents had a replica of my first shoe forged out of copper; it still sits on the bookshelf in their home. They also keep a set of handprints that I made in clay throughout the years, so that they can sentimentally remember my childhood.
